Based on the current research, we cannot say that microdosing makes people demonstrably more creative in general. People who microdose regularly report feeling more creative, curious, or open-minded. However, controlled studies usually do not find the same effect in objective creativity tests.

There is one interesting nuance. An analysis published in 2026, combining three double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, found a small and specific effect. Participants did not produce more ideas, but a slightly higher proportion of the ideas they generated were considered original. That is a much narrower finding than the common claim that microdosing enhances creativity.

The most honest conclusion is therefore:

Microdosing is not a proven creativity switch. There are, however, tentative indications that under certain circumstances it may influence the originality of ideas.

In this article, we look at what people experience, what researchers have actually measured, and why those two outcomes often differ.

What do we actually mean by creativity?

Creativity is about more than suddenly having a brilliant idea. In scientific research, a distinction is often made between two types of thinking.

Divergent thinking

Divergent thinking is the ability to generate different possibilities. It involves thinking broadly, making new connections, and coming up with multiple possible answers. For example:

Developing different angles for a campaign;

Finding new uses for an existing product;

Exploring several solutions to the same problem;

Free association without immediately judging every idea.

When measuring divergent thinking, researchers look at factors such as the number of ideas produced, the variety between those ideas, and how original the responses are.

Convergent thinking

Convergent thinking is the ability to select the best or most appropriate solution. It involves narrowing many possibilities down to one choice. You use it when refining a concept, making a decision, or determining which idea is actually feasible.

Creative work requires both forms of thinking. First, you need to create space for different directions. Then, you need to select, structure, and execute. This distinction is important when reading research on microdosing. The small effect found in recent research only applied to one specific measure of divergent thinking. No improvement was found in convergent thinking.

Why is microdosing so often associated with creativity?

A microdose is a small amount of a psychedelic substance, such as psilocybin found in truffles. The aim is not to hallucinate or have a full psychedelic experience. Some people notice subtle changes in their mood, attention, or perception, while others notice little or nothing at all.

What stands out is that people rarely describe creativity as a sudden increase in talent. Instead, they tend to describe a change in the way they relate to their work or thoughts.

People report, for example, that they:

See new connections more easily;

Approach a problem with greater curiosity;

Are less quick to dismiss an idea;

Feel more motivated to create something;

Find it easier to consider a different perspective;

Feel less restricted by their inner critic.

That is an important distinction. In these experiences, the microdose does not automatically generate new ideas. What may change are the mental conditions in which ideas emerge. This nuance is often lost in articles about microdosing. “Feeling more creative” is then translated into “being demonstrably more creative”, even though those are not the same thing scientifically.

What do people who microdose report?

The positive stories about microdosing do not come from nowhere. Several observational studies show that creativity is regularly mentioned as a perceived benefit.

Creativity as a self-reported benefit

In a 2019 study, researchers collected the experiences of 278 people who microdosed with LSD, psilocybin, or both. Creativity was one of the most frequently mentioned benefits. Around 12.9% of the reported benefits fell within this category.

The researchers included not only “being more creative”, but also curiosity, openness, divergent thinking, and a greater ability to shift perspective. This study tells us what people experience. It does not prove that the microdose caused the change. The participants had volunteered for the study and knew they were microdosing. People with an interest in microdosing or positive expectations may therefore have been overrepresented. There was also no placebo group against which their experiences could be compared.

Feeling more creative on a dosing day

Another study followed 98 people over a period of six weeks. Participants recorded how they felt and functioned each day.

On dosing days, they rated themselves as more creative, focused, productive, and positive than on other days. These higher creativity scores did not clearly continue in the days that followed.

Some of the participants also completed a series of psychological tests at the beginning and end of the study period. After six weeks, no clear improvement was found on a separate, standardised measure of creativity.

This reveals a pattern that appears repeatedly in the research:

People can feel more creative without performing demonstrably better on a creativity test.

That does not mean the experience is unimportant. Feelings of curiosity, confidence, or engagement can influence the way someone works. It does, however, mean that we need to continue distinguishing between a subjective experience and an objectively measured change.

What does controlled scientific research find?

When participants do not know whether they are receiving an active microdose or a placebo, the picture becomes more cautious.

2018: a promising first result

In 2018, researchers from Leiden University studied participants at a microdosing event in the Netherlands. Before and after taking a microdose of truffles, participants completed tasks measuring divergent and convergent thinking. After taking the microdose, they performed better on both types of tasks. Their scores on a measure of general intelligence did not change. The study received considerable attention and still forms the basis for many online claims about microdosing and creativity.

However, the research had one important limitation: there was no placebo group. The participants knew they had taken a microdose and were attending an event entirely focused on microdosing. Their expectations, enthusiasm, the setting, and the fact that they completed a similar test for a second time may therefore have influenced the results. The researchers themselves emphasised the need for further placebo-controlled research.

2022: subjective effects, but no improvement in creativity

In 2022, researchers studied 34 people who were planning to begin microdosing with psilocybin-containing mushrooms. The study was double-blind and placebo-controlled. During different sessions, participants received either a capsule containing a low dose of dried mushrooms or a placebo. The active dose produced noticeable subjective effects and changes in brain activity in some participants. However, no improvement was found on tasks measuring divergent or convergent thinking.

The researchers also found no convincing positive effects on wellbeing or other cognitive functions. On some cognitive tasks, there were small shifts towards poorer performance. Notably, the subjective effects were clearest among participants who correctly guessed that they had received the active dose. The researchers concluded that expectations probably explain part of the reported benefits.

2026: a small and specific effect on originality

The most interesting recent study was published in 2026 in the scientific journal Neuropharmacology. The researchers combined data from three double-blind, placebo-controlled studies of microdosing with psilocybin-containing truffles. One of these studies had been preregistered. In total, the results of 171 participants were analysed. No overall improvement in creativity was found. Participants did not generate more ideas, and their convergent thinking did not improve.

The researchers did, however, find a difference in the ratio between originality and the total number of responses. Among the ideas participants produced, the proportion of original responses was slightly higher after active microdosing.This result remained after the researchers accounted for what participants believed they had taken and for several demographic factors. The raw originality score was only higher when the dose relative to body weight was taken into account. No effects were found on other measures of divergent thinking or on convergent thinking. The researchers therefore describe the effect as being limited to the quality of divergent thinking. This does not mean that microdosing makes someone more creative in a broad sense. At most, the study provides an indication that the originality of ideas may change subtly under specific circumstances.

What do we know so far?

When we compare the different studies, the following picture emerges:

What people report
People who microdose regularly say that they feel more creative, open-minded, and curious.

What controlled tests usually find
Most double-blind, placebo-controlled studies do not find a broad improvement in creative performance.

What may change
A 2026 analysis found a small effect on the proportion of original ideas produced during divergent thinking.

What has not been demonstrated
There is no convincing evidence that microdosing leads to more ideas, better decision-making, improved convergent thinking, or consistently better creative performance.

Why do experiences and measurements differ so much? There is probably no single explanation. Several factors may be involved at the same time.

1. A creativity test is not the same as creative work

A laboratory test usually lasts only a few minutes. A real creative process may take days, weeks, or months. A writer who finds it easier to begin a first paragraph, an entrepreneur who frames a problem differently, or a designer who is less likely to dismiss an unusual idea may experience this as a meaningful change. That change will not necessarily appear in a short task that asks someone to generate as many uses as possible for an everyday object.

2. Expectations influence the experience

Microdosing has a strong reputation as a tool for focus, mood, and creativity. Someone who expects to feel more creative may pay closer attention to creative moments. A good idea may then be attributed more quickly to the microdose, while a less productive day is explained by poor sleep, stress, or workload. The extent to which expectations may play a role became clear in a self-blinding study involving 191 participants. Participants incorporated placebos into their usual microdosing routine without knowing during which weeks they were taking an active dose or a placebo. Both the microdosing group and the placebo group improved on several psychological measures. On most outcomes, no clear differences were found between the groups.

There were a few small acute differences, including in self-reported creativity. According to the researchers, these could largely be explained by the fact that participants were often able to guess correctly whether they had taken an active dose.

A placebo effect does not mean that someone is imagining or inventing an experience. Expectations can genuinely influence how someone feels, what they pay attention to, and how they behave. They simply make it more difficult to determine which part of a change is directly caused by the substance itself.

3. Feeling more creative is not the same as performing more creatively

A feeling of creative energy can still be valuable. It may help someone start earlier, continue for longer, or enjoy the process of creating more. However, that does not automatically mean that the final result will be more original, useful, or effective. You may feel freer during a brainstorming session, while your ability to evaluate or execute ideas remains unchanged. This fits with the 2026 research: a small effect was found on one measure of originality within divergent thinking, but no improvement was found in convergent thinking.

4. Context also plays a role

A microdose is not taken in a vacuum. Someone beginning a protocol may simultaneously decide to live or work more consciously. They may start keeping a journal, turn off notifications, go for walks, make time for reflection, or finally begin an important project. All of these changes may support creativity, even without a pharmacological effect. What someone experiences may therefore arise from a combination of:

The substance taken;

Expectations;

Intention;

Environment;

Attention;

Behaviour;

Sleep, mood, and workload.

For a personal experiment, that is not necessarily a problem. It simply means that you should be careful about concluding that one factor alone caused the entire change.

How can you apply this in practice?

Scientific research cannot predict what you will personally experience. You can, however, observe your experience more systematically than if you only try to remember afterwards how you felt. This will not provide scientific proof, but it may help you recognise patterns in your own behaviour and creative process.

Choose a specific question in advance

Do not simply ask: “Am I more creative?”

Make the question more specific:

Do I find it easier to begin a first draft?

Do I explore more directions before making a choice?

Am I less likely to dismiss unusual ideas?

Do I actually develop more of my ideas?

Do I experience more enjoyment or engagement during creative work?

The more specific the question, the more useful your observations will be.

Do not only measure how you feel

Record both your experience and what you actually did. For example:

How creative did I feel today?

How many ideas did I write down?

How many of those ideas did I develop further?

Did I begin the task I had planned?

Which external factors played a role, such as sleep, stress, or my schedule?

The difference between “I felt creative” and “I made something” is valuable information.

Compare different days

Fungki protocols include fixed dosing days and rest days. This allows you to compare your experience across different types of days. Do not focus only on the dose. Also record factors such as:

Sleep quality;

Mood;

Workload;

Caffeine;

Exercise;

Social commitments;

The stage of a project.

This helps prevent you from automatically attributing every change to the microdose.

Write down your expectations in advance

You cannot completely remove expectations, but you can make them visible. Before you begin, write down what you think will happen. At the end of the protocol, look back and consider whether your observations matched those expectations.

Look for patterns, not one exceptional day

A single productive or inspiring day proves very little. Creativity is influenced by many different factors. Look for patterns over a longer period rather than focusing on one experience that stood out as particularly positive or negative.

How we look at it at Fungki

At Fungki, we do not see microdosing as a shortcut to brilliance. A microdose does not write a text, create a design, or build a business. And the current research does not provide enough evidence to promise that microdosing will make you demonstrably more creative. What a protocol can offer is a structured period in which you observe your own way of thinking and working more consciously. For example, you may begin to notice:

When ideas arise more easily;

When you correct yourself too quickly;

Which conditions support your attention;

Which patterns keep returning;

What happens when you do not immediately judge every idea.

A period of conscious observation like this can be valuable in itself. But that is not the same as a proven pharmacological effect. That is precisely why we approach microdosing as a personal experiment, not as a promise. Do not think harder. Look more consciously at how you think.

Train your mind like an athlete

Would you like to take a structured approach to microdosing for creativity? Explore the Beginners Protocol and discover how to track your experience over eight weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Does microdosing make you more creative?

This has not been demonstrated in a general sense. People regularly report feeling more creative, but controlled research usually finds no broad improvement on objective creativity tests. A 2026 analysis did find a small effect on the proportion of original ideas produced during divergent thinking. No effect was found on the total number of ideas or on convergent thinking.

Why do people feel more creative while microdosing?

Expectations may play a role. Laboratory tests also do not measure every aspect of a real creative process. In addition, people often change more than just their dose during a microdosing protocol. They may consciously make time for reflection, reduce distractions, or start keeping a journal. The perceived change may therefore result from several factors acting together.

Does a placebo effect mean the experience is not real?

No. A placebo effect is a real change in experience or behaviour that is influenced by expectations and context. It does not mean that someone is imagining or inventing the experience. It does, however, make it more difficult to determine how much of the change is directly caused by the active substance.

Is microdosing more likely to help with brainstorming or finishing work?

The limited positive result from the 2026 study concerned divergent thinking: the generation of original possibilities. No improvement was found in convergent thinking, which involves evaluating different options and working towards one suitable solution.

This does not mean that microdosing has been proven to help with brainstorming. It only means that the sole positive effect found was within this specific aspect of creativity.

Can you determine after one dosing day whether microdosing works for you?

A single day tells you very little. Sleep, mood, expectations, stress, and the type of work you are doing can all strongly influence your experience. It is therefore better to look for recurring patterns throughout a complete protocol and compare dosing days with rest days.

Is microdosing safe?

Microdosing is not suitable for everyone, and research into its long-term effects and potential risks is still developing.
